Page 1 Page 2 Summary Satan opens the debate in Pandemonium by claiming that Heaven is not yet lost, and that the fallen angels or devils might rise up stronger in another battle if they work together. Sinai, in fact the Holy Spirit. This may mean the Hebrews were denigrating their enemies' god by referring to him as dung. Far less—to riches, pow'r, or freedom, But what your lordship likes to gie them? Chaos agrees and points out the way to where the Earth has recently been created. Apparently, Satan had forgotten these events.
Quiet falls upon the crowd as the respected Beelzebub begins to speak. With great difficulty, Satan moves onward, and Sin and Death follow far behind, building a bridge from Hell to Earth on which evil spirits can travel to tempt mortals. Uriel is the angel whom Satan tricks when he is disguised as a cherub. He prefers to peacefully advance their freedom and asks the devils to be industrious in Hell.
David Mikics argues, by contrast, these positions "overstate the independence of the characters' stances, and therefore miss the way in which Adam and Eve are entwined with each other. Not the traditional model of a good wife, Milton's Eve is often unwilling to be submissive towards Adam. For a complete description of each devil, see the List of Characters. The poem thus commences in the middle of the story, as epics traditionally do. The other is only a dark shape. But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

Clearly, the debate in Hell weighs only different evils, rather than bringing its participants closer to truth.
As with several religions, the names of any earlier foreign or "pagan" deities often became synonymous with the concept of an adversarial entity.
Gabriel confronts Satan after his angels find Satan whispering to Eve in the Garden. The final part of Book I is the construction of Pandemonium, the capital of Hell. According to William McCollom, one quality of the classical tragic hero is that he is not perfectly good and that his defeat is caused by a tragic flaw, as Satan causes both the downfall of man and the eternal damnation of his fellow fallen angels despite his dedication to his comrades.
He has just fallen from Heaven where he was the closest angel to God. In response, the angel Michael explains that Adam does not need to build physical objects to experience the presence of God.
Milton characterizes him as such, but Satan lacks several key traits that would otherwise make him the definitive protagonist in the work. He has not completely lost the angelic aura that was his in Heaven.
Death in turn raped his mother Sin, begetting the dogs that now torment her. In others words, they attributed the work of Jesus to the work of Satan. Her first act in existence is to turn away from Adam to look at and ponder her own reflection.
Still he adds that it is his intention to continue the struggle against God, saying, "Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven" So then, they will be your judges. George to empale, I have searched now for quite a while, And it has been to no avail, -Father Beelzebub: It is my pleasure to reveal, St.
I've travelled far to reach this isle, Seeking brave St. In the debate among the devils, he argues against war, seeing no profit to be gained from it. What he does deny is that God is innocent of its wickedness: 'Milton steadily drives home that the inmost counsel of God was the Fortunate Fall of man; however wicked Satan's plan may be, it is God's plan too [since God in Paradise Lost is depicted as being both omniscient and omnipotent].
Critics have long wrestled with the question of why an antimonarchist and defender of regicide should have chosen a subject that obliged him to defend monarchical authority. Finding himself alone, Adam complains and requests a mate from God, who grants his request and creates Eve to be Adam's conjugal companion and helpmate.
Both Jesus and those who follow Him will find persecution at the hands of those who oppose His message. But hear, my lord! The rest of the devils agree and vote unanimously in favor of this plan. To the modern audience, Satan may seem heroic as he struggles to make a Heaven of Hell, but the original audience knew, and Milton's lines confirm, that Satan's war with God had been lost absolutely before the poem begins.
Speaking of the complexity of Milton's epic, there are John Rogers' lectures on Paradise Lost which try their best to synthesize the "advantages and limitations of a diverse range of interpretive techniques and theoretical concerns in Milton scholarship and criticism.
Chaos is joined by his consort Night, with Confusion, Discord and others at their side. Lying on the lake, Satan is described as gigantic; he is compared to a Titan or the Leviathan. Satan goes against God's law and therefore becomes corrupt and lacking of virtue and, as Piccolomini warned, "vice may be mistaken for heroic virtue.
Death in turn rapes his mother, begetting the mass of beasts that torment her lower half. Monotheistic Jewish reference to Baal was almost certainly pejorative, and grew to be used among other terms for Satan.
