Unfortunately, I don't think either is useful in assessing the state of American poetry, not because they appear mutually exclusive -- they aren't -- but because, after a little examination, neither one says anything important about the state of American poetry.

While Romanticism transitioned into Victorianism in post-reform England, it grew more energetic in America from the s through to the Civil War. His ego had to expand accordingly.

First, the ease of publication plus the general erosion of the private sphere of life has created a glut of published therapy poems, works that, though useful in processing the particular emotions of the poet, contribute nothing whatsoever to the general progress of the human endeavor.

But I guess I just sneaked them onto the list, didn't I? It can be divided into five major periods, each of which has unique characteristics, notable authors, and representative works.

Cummings remains notable for his experiments with typography and evocation of a spontaneous, childlike vision of reality. I think he wrote those pages because everything he describes happened to him in real life, in one fashion or another, during the period in when he was working on the novel.

Nettelbeck are among the many poets who are still actively continuing the Small Press Poets tradition. Aye wonderful things are these fast falling leaves, From year after year nature daintily weaves With dew drops for needles, with sunbeams for thread, Gay garbs for the living from shrouds of the dead.

Unfortunately, without a meaningful, descriptive, empirical or at least reasonably demonstrable fact about poetry as an entity, I can only assess its state by assessing what is actually being written.

There are 14 such writers whom we might on that basis call American poets they had actually been to America and to different degrees, written poems or verses about the place. Most people don't know what a horsepower engine is useful for, but the car commercials convince them they want one by showing the car in evocative environments; driving on a beautiful winding road or hauling concrete at a construction site.

Romanticism as a worldview took hold in western Europe in the late 18th century, and American writers embraced it in the early 19th century. During the s Edna St. All IP addresses in Germany are blocked.

I refuse to ask any less of it. John Berryman — and Robert Lowell — were the leading lights in what was to become known as the Confessional movementwhich was to have a strong influence on later poets like Sylvia Plath — and Anne Sexton — The detail about putting away the pencil and slip of paper catches my eye.
